AI and search news
What changed in AI and search, and what to do about it.
Short notes on changes to Google Search, ads, AI models and automation tools. Each one is checked against the original announcement, with what it means for a business in Kenya or East Africa and one thing to try.
Google adds more links and source context to AI Mode and Overviews
Google says AI answers in Search now show more inline links, and show them higher up in responses more often. It is testing a section at the top of a response for official websites, rolling out news carousels to more locations and languages, and testing clickable creator and publisher names that link to Search profiles in AI Mode.
What it means: If someone in Nairobi or Kampala asks an AI answer about your business or your topic, a clear official page on your site has a better chance of being the link they click.
Try this: Search your own business name and your main service in AI Mode and note which pages get linked. Then make sure your contact, booking or order page is clear, current and easy to identify as the official one.
WhatsApp calls now accept guests without a WhatsApp account
WhatsApp account holders can create a call link and invite anyone to join a call from a computer browser, with no WhatsApp account needed. The host must approve each guest, and calls can have up to 32 people. Calendar integrations for Google and Outlook are planned for later this year.
What it means: A business that already runs on WhatsApp can now hold calls with clients, suppliers or partners who do not use the app, without asking them to install anything.
Try this: Open the Calls tab in WhatsApp, tap the plus icon, create a call link and use it for your next client or supplier meeting. Tell your team that guests wait in a waiting room until the host admits them.
Google releases Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini API and Gemini app
Google released Gemini 4 Argon, a new model aimed at complex, multi-step work such as coding, finance and legal tasks. It is available through the Gemini API in AI Studio, and in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The API supports a 1M token limit for input and output combined.
What it means: Teams in Kenya and East Africa that already use Gemini for drafting, analysis or automation can test a newer model on long, multi-step work, either through the API or a Pro or Ultra subscription.
Try this: Pick one real task, such as summarising a long supplier contract or drafting replies to a batch of customer enquiries. Run the same prompt in your current model and in Argon through AI Studio or the Gemini app, then compare the results before changing any workflow.
Google Ads adds a Data Strength Uplift metric for Demand Gen
Google is launching a Data Strength Uplift metric inside Google Ads to show conversion gains linked to your data setup. Data Manager is expanding to Display & Video 360 and Google Analytics, and enhanced conversions will soon reach both as well.
What it means: If you run Demand Gen campaigns, Google is pushing advertisers to improve their conversion tracking and first party data, and your results may depend on how well that is set up.
Try this: Check that your conversion tracking in Google Ads is working properly, and look for the Data Strength Uplift metric in your account as it rolls out. Read Google's refreshed Data Strength best practices guide for the next steps.
Google's September 2026 spam update started on 24 September 2026 and applied globally, in all languages. Google marked the rollout complete on 8 October 2026.
What it means: If your search traffic dropped in late September or early October, check whether it lines up with these dates before changing anything else.
Try this: Compare Search Console clicks for the two weeks before 24 September with the two weeks after 8 October, using periods of the same length.
Google Search Central grouped its YouTube videos into two learning paths: Search fundamentals for beginners, covering how Search works, Search Console and Google Trends, and Technical SEO fundamentals for developers.
What it means: A free, ordered starting point from the source itself for staff or students learning SEO.
Try this: Give the beginners' playlist to whoever updates your website.
Anthropic introduced Claude Sonnet 5.5, a faster model for well-scoped everyday tasks that sits alongside Claude Opus 5.5. Anthropic reports large gains over Sonnet 5 on agentic coding and image understanding, and says a smaller Haiku 5.5 model will follow.
What it means: Faster, lighter models are the ones most likely to power customer-facing assistants and document work in small businesses.
Try this: If you use an AI assistant at work, re-test the tasks it struggled with before. Results change between model versions.
Search Console now shows searches made with images
Google added a multimodal search type to the Search Console performance reports, including the report for generative AI features. It covers people who search with an image: Google Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search and the Chrome "Search this image" option. It is rolling out globally and only appears if a site gets this traffic.
What it means: Phone-camera searches are common for products and places, so shops, restaurants and venues can now see whether their photos bring visitors.
Try this: In Search Console, open Performance, switch the search type to Multimodal and see which pages appear. Use your own sharp photos and describe them in the page text.
Track your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube posts in Search Console
Search Console has a new property type, platform properties, for accounts on Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube. Once connected, you get a performance report with clicks, impressions and the posts and search terms behind them, an insights overview and milestone badges for Google Search and Discover. It is becoming available gradually.
What it means: Many businesses in East Africa sell on Instagram or TikTok without a website. This is a free way to see which posts Google sends people to.
Try this: In Search Console, choose Add property, pick the platform and follow the verification steps. If the option is missing, the rollout has not reached your account yet.
