The problem
Before writing a page or running an ad, a business needs to know the words its customers actually type into Google. Google's own Keyword Planner sits inside Google Ads, so it asks for an advertising account before it shows anything. Most other keyword tools are built around larger markets.
I wanted a tool where someone in Nairobi, Kampala, Dar es Salaam or Kigali can type a phrase, pick their country and see the numbers straight away.
What I built
- One search box and a country picker. Type a keyword, choose Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania or Rwanda, and get keyword ideas with how many people search each one every month.
- Trends, not just totals. Each keyword shows a 12-month trend and the change against last year, so rising and falling phrases stand out.
- Filters that answer real questions. Buyers, Questions and Rising views pick out the phrases worth writing or advertising for next, alongside ad competition.
- Free to use, no sign-up needed. Five searches a day without an account. Signing in with an email code or Google gives 30 a day, CSV downloads and past searches. There are no passwords, and an account can be deleted from its own page.
How it is built
A FastAPI service on a VPS I manage calls the Google Ads API directly and caches results in Redis, so repeat searches are quick and stay within Google's limits. The page on this site is static and talks to that service through a strict content security policy.
Privacy shaped the design. Daily limits are counted against a salted, hashed form of the visitor's IP address that is deleted after two days, and anonymous searching sets no cookie. Accounts live in a small SQLite database with daily backups. Sign-in codes are sent from my own mailbox and work once for 15 minutes.
The same Google Ads keyword data guides the Insights on this site, so I use the method I offer to clients.
Where it stands
Kwarry went from first commit on 17 October 2026 to a live tool on 18 October, with sign-in added on 19 October. It is new, so there is no usage history to report yet. Here is one real search, saved on 19 October 2026: "website design" in Kenya returns 442 keyword ideas worth 13,040 searches a month.
